Established in 2016 under Executive Order 15, the Alabama Office of Minority Affairs (AOMA) is a cabinet-level agency designed to support the growing and thriving minority communities across the State of Alabama. As the second agency of its kind in the nation, the mission of the AOMA is to ensure the inclusion of women and minorities in the success and prosperity of the State of Alabama by identifying and addressing disparities, fostering inclusion, and investing resources to enhance the social, political, economic, educational, and healthcare access and outcomes throughout the state. The office strives to:
- Ensure equal opportunities and protect civil rights for minority groups, including racial, ethnic, rural, and women's communities.
- Expand access to affordable, quality healthcare and improve health equity through tailored programs, community partnerships, and advocacy.
- Provide leadership, policy guidance, technical assistance, and support to organizations/agencies serving minority populations.
- Advise the Governor, legislators, and officials on issues impacting minority groups and recommend policies to address disparities.
- Support minority-owned businesses, expand economic opportunities, and facilitate rural development to improve quality of life.
- Promote equal access to educational opportunities and career development.
- Foster supportive partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
AOMA envisions Creating and supporting a prosperous Alabama where all citizens have inclusive opportunities to grow, thrive, and contribute to the state's economic and social fabric.
AOMA supports these communities by ensuring representation, offering resources in education, healthcare, housing, employment, and business opportunities, and advocating for justice and equality.
The focus areas include ensuring equal opportunities, protecting civil rights, expanding access to healthcare and education, providing leadership and policy guidance, supporting minority-owned businesses, and promoting educational and career development.
